Must Haves to Stock before delivery – For Moms
Your excitement knows no bounds as you are approaching your due date. You can’t wait to start spending time with your little munchkin. You have gone through all the to-do and must-have lists you could come across and feel confidently prepared for the baby.
But have you forgotten your needs in the process. The delivery essentials, you will be needing in the next few days. If so, now is the time to get ahead with it. Because once the baby is gonna takeover the entire house, trust me you cannot expect to locate two of the same pair of shoes.
Like everything else associated with motherhood, the advice and suggestions regarding the must haves to stock before delivery are also plenty. You will get a few from friends and family and a vast number from the internet. You will feel like to stock up on everything you hear especially if you are a first time mom. But trust me, not everything marked as “Must Have” is actually a must have. Taking a well informed decision in this regard is not only gonna save you bucks but lots of closet space which you are gonna need in abundance once the baby is here.
To help you out with your confusion, I am listing the essential few which you can really can’t do without.
Must Haves to stock before Delivery for New Moms
Heavy Flow Maxi Pads
Lochia or post-partum bleeding can last anywhere between 15-45 days. Thus, being stocked up on maxi sanitary pads built to handle heavy flow is a must. The hospital might supply you with pads during your stay there. Once you are home, you are on your own. Thus, these become the foremost thing that you need to stock up on.
Disposable Underwear
Disposable underwear can come in handy especially during the initial days post-partum. Again few hospitals supply this or you can carry your own.
Note: There is a high chance that you might not need them by the time you get home as heavy flow sanitary pads can take care of your needs. So just have a few handy.
Nursing Bra
Nursing bras are a blessing for breastfeeding moms. I am personally a big fan of them. Every penny spent on maternity bras has been worth it for the hassle free experience they provide to the nursing mother.
Maternity Gowns/Tops
Stock up on some pretty maternity dresses or tops as this is what you are gonna want to wear throughout your breastfeeding journey. A maternity wear is any kind of dress which has zippers built into them for smooth and discreet breastfeeding experience. And the fact that they come in all variations from nightwear to ethnic wear to office wear, you really can save a lot of time and trouble. There is no need to compromise on style just because you are a nursing mom.
Breast pads
An investment to save your good clothes from stains and you from a good many awkward situations. They come in both reusable and disposable variants and you can pick what suits you best. For starters, you can buy a pack of 10-15 if going for the disposable ones.
Note: My suggestion would be not stock up on it beforehand. Because I have from my personal experience seen a few people who have required it for almost a year while others who never had the need. So first wait to confirm which category you fall into.
A Stretch mark lotion/oil
If you have already not been using it since your 2nd trimester, then I would say you are quite late. But better late than never. Buy a safe lotion or cream from any reputed brand. I have personally used mamaearth and moms co. and found both of them to be good.
A stretch marks lotion or cream is not just for the aesthetics of your skin but also useful for skin dryness and itchiness that comes along with your bulging belly.
Nipple Cream
I cannot emphasize enough on the importance of a good nipple cream for new moms especially the breastfeeding ones. It’s better to have it in store beforehand than letting yourself suffer and end up getting it anyways. Breastfeeding is meant to be a beautiful journey for both mother and child. A good quality nipple cream makes it easier to bear the initial days of pain and discomfort caused by nipple cracks.
Note: Do remember to wipe off the cream before feeding your baby.
Diaper Bag
Move over your totes and slings coz a diaper bag is gonna be your must have accessory for the next few years. It does not have to be boring at all. Invest in a stylish, fit to carry and strong diaper bag. Because irrespective of the name, the bag is not gonna be used for holding just diapers.
You will be carrying diapers, baby wipes, baby food, bottles, sippers, baby lotion, some toys and extra set of clothes at any given time in your diaper bag. It should also have space for carrying your basic needs like phone, wallet and everything else you use your handbag for.
Your files and IDs
You don’t want to be rushing all over the place looking for your ID proofs and medical files when it is time to go to the hospital. The best way to prevent that is to keep these things ready at a place (probably in your hospital bag) This will cause you and your partner, less anxiety and stress.
Sort things out at the household level
If you are a second time parent, you know the drill and if you are a first time one then also you know enough about all those sleepless nights and the struggles of early parenting. Therefore it is very much recommended to sort things out at the household level before your delivery.
Arrange for any help you might be needing like a cook or someone to help with the baby. If you have family coming over to support you, you have to ensure that they get the maximum help and assistance.
Also stock up on the household essentials like groceries and toiletries. This will reduce the mayhem as you get settled down into a new routine post partum.
Lastly, don’t let any checklist make you feel anxious or unprepared. It is good to be prepared for things beforehand but remember that Motherhood is a new experience everyday. Try to use the above list as a means to make your experience a smooth and trouble free one.
Save this list for later.
It still leaves room to figure out plenty as the journey progresses.
Also don’t forget to let me know in the comments what all things apart from the above can make a new mom’s journey smoother.
These are very essential items to have after giving birth! Your blog is very useful for new moms!
Some great advice here! Really helpful ❤️
Very detailed list for new a new mom to refer to prior to delivery! I only wish I had something like this when I delivered my babies. I think I actually took a pair of regular size jeans to the hospital with me thinking I’d wear them right away lol. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Karen. You might not have had something like this back then but now you take it in your stride to help several women who get inspired by your blog everyday.
You know I have never heard of nipple cream. I wish I knew about this when I had my babies. I was just told it would get better but suffered greatly when I breast fed. Thanks for this post and letting women know what is needed. I am a grandma now but have adult kids who are in their childbearing years.
yes it is true. Moms are generally told many of the discomforts would pass with time. But that is no reason to suffer. Thank you so much for reading and liking the post.
That’s some really great advice! Thanks, I’m normally the planner, so this makes things much easier.
I wish there was internet when I had my first two! Sources like this were better for my third child just 14 years ago but not as good as this one! Great list of items to consider! I’ll pass it on to my older kids who are having kids now.
I am really glad you found the post useful.
